For the last couple of years, the Mars One settlement project has been in the news on and off. Its exposure is about to go into high gear as 100 people officially sign on in the hopes of people the final 24 to make the trip to the red planet. 50 men and 50 women will be trained to take the one-way journey, which is set to launch by 2025.
What makes the Mars One settlement project interesting is that it will be partially funded through a reality TV show, which will center around the civilians as they train to become astronauts. Sonia Nicole Van Meter, 36, a D.C.-area political consultant and one of the 100 Mars One settlement finalists, says, "Space exploration and colonization is the next step for human evolution. It’s in our nature to explore, to look out out over our landscape and wonder what’s over the next hill."
