Ultra-rare whiskeys have never been more popular and a recent release of Macallan 50 year old single malt is reported to be worth $35,000 a bottle. The release will of course be a limited release for the distillery, with just 200 bottles being available worldwide. The whiskey itself is a single malt that has spent half a century in handcrafted European oak sherry seasoned casks from Spain. This maturing process gives the spirit a dark amber color, along with full bodied flavors and a deep aroma.
The Macallan 50 year old malt will be bottled at an ABV of 44% and is said to boast notes of vanilla, blackcurrants and peat. On the palate, flavors of sweet vanila, toffee and fudge are complimented and cut through with arm peppercorns and fruity flavors off orange peels and figs. The Macallan 50 year is best enjoyed neat, or with a splash of water, though collectors may not want to open the bottle as it will only appreciate in value in a decade or so.
