Brooklyn-based studio Format Architecture Office designs the new Leica Store & Gallery located in Manhattan's Meatpacking district. It is defined by its juxtaposing design that blends modern elements with the historical components of the neighborhood. What was once a dilapidated building is now transformed into an elevated retail space and gallery.
The renovation project gutted the space to expand it whilst keeping the original timber ceiling frame. The second floor is illuminated by skylights and the second-floor plate is carefully cut to create a mezzanine that offers a dynamically high entryway. This invites plenty of natural light to enter both floors at once. The storefront is made up of two parts and assembled by brick on top of steel and glass.
