Tinder is the current leader in the push interracial couple emojis and has decided to petition Unicode to create mixed-racial emoji couples. Tinder is joined in its campaign by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Emojination founder Jennifer 8. Lee in a campaign the group is calling #RepresentLove. This petition is not at all unwarranted, as a survey conducted by Tinder found that 52% of the 4,244 adults aged 25-45 felt that interracial couples were not represented in emojis, GIFs and memes.
The need for interracial couple emojis may seem like a frivolous concern, but as the use of emojis grows, the need for equal representation is very much necessary. It is also strange that these kinds of emojis have yet to be added as various skin tone options have been available since 2015 and Microsoft introduced 52,000 new emojis with the release of Windows 10. Tinder's proposal for interracial emojis is quite simple: three new skin tones for both versions of the preexisting couple emoji, which would account for just 21 new emojis.
