High Desert Retreat was designed by Aidlin Darling Design and is located in Palm Desert, California. The American architecture studio negotiated a delicate balance between naturalist styles and modernist aesthetics to achieve a striking design.
The house aims to dialogue with its surroundings as it organically nestles into a constellation of boulders. To maintain a discreet design that both respects the nature of the site and the rocky desert topography, the clients requested the home to blend into its landscape. The Aidlin Darling Design team created a floating roof plane to provide ample shading and protection from the harsh sun inside and outside the home. They used blackened wood siding made from specially treated pine wood to create a gentle contrast with the desert hues.
