'From Selfie to Self-Expression' is an upcoming art exhibition scheduled for the Saatchi Gallery in London. A product of a partnership between the gallery and Huawei, the electronics producer, the gallery will explore this novel form of self-expression while accepting the work of international artists (whether amateur or professional) through the form of selfies.
Fine art and visual media are no strangers to self-depictions. Self portraits have been part of the art history canon since the Renaissance and earlier. Nonetheless, the popularity of selfies represent a paradigm shift in that self-representation, both because of the capabilities of the technology (q.v. smartphones with front-facing cameras) and its mass availability. From Selfie to Self-Expression looks to explore the ways in which that difference exists.
Interested entrants in the exhibition can upload their selfies to the Saatchi Gallery website.
