Dior Took Cues from Sports for a High-Fashion Spring Collection

Debuting her first collection as the newest artistic director for Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri wowed her A-list guests at Paris Fashion Week with her fencing-inspired collection mixed with elegant dresses and tulle skirts.
Chiuri showed both toughness and fragility on her runway debut. She presented a thoroughly feminist collection of fencer’s jackets and tulle skirts. “Fencing is a discipline in which there is balance between thought and action,” says Chiuri. “The harmony between mind and heart is essential.” The fencing theme brought streetwear and sporty influences to the collection.
Tulle skirts, silk chiffon and georgette are embellished and embroidered with zodiac signs, bees and tarot figures appearing like pieces of art, and matched with lightly quilted and embroidered tank tops. Her collection also included low heels, sneakers, or high fencing boots.
