This elephant sanctuary combines architecture and landscape into a cohesive 11,000 square foot dome. Swiss firm Markus Schietsch Architekten created this dome for the Zurich Zoo to create a natural feeling and outdoor atmosphere.
The shell-like dome is purely made of wood and there is grass siding that runs throughout the entire elephant sanctuary. An important part of the habitat is the multiple swimming pools to allow the animals a play area, which also enhances the naturalistic feeling.
