The Katoomba housing scheme takes a modern approach to creating elderly housing. The Sydney-based architecture firm 'Enter Projects' was faced with the challenge of developing elderly housing that accommodated their needs in a more efficient manner than typical retirement homes. In attempting to attract the older demographic, Enter Projects created a series of houses that had easy access, minimal levels with wheelchair ramps.
The stunning result is a contemporary retirement home that provides privacy for each couple or single dweller. Its simple shape makes construction fast and efficient, while also serving all the needs of their target market. Enter Projects opted for loft-style ceilings with a maximum of two floors. Big doors makes entrance more convenient and large windows bring in tonnes of natural light. If Katoomba elderly housing is a success, its flat-packed modular design can be easily replicated in other cities.
