No wonder the Carbon Diem app, created by inventor Andreas Zachariah, received an award for innovation by the European Space Agency: it is an application for mobile phones that tracks the user’s carbon footprint.
Whether walking or riding in a vehicle, the user-friendly Carbon Diem “knows” the mode of transportation used. It uses an advanced software technology that transmits speed and distance, calculates it, and then uploads the information to a Global Positioning System (GPS).
Hopefully, when it becomes available in the Spring of 2009, it will spark other companies, via competition, to implement the same sort of technology that helps consumers be aware of their carbon footprints.
