'Truphone,' the UK-based mobile network operator, has announced a new initiative called 'Freedom for Free,' where it aims to reduce emissions in the mobile phone industry. Truphone owns a proprietary eSIM software that allows for digital identity verification on a mobile phone without the need for a small programmed SIM card. As part of the Freedom for Free initiative, Truphone will provide this software to other mobile network operators for free.
This act of benevolence is intended to reduce the large amount of CO2 emissions caused by SIM cards. SIM cards indirectly produce emissions through the manufacturing process, and used SIM cards eventually become e-waste, which further harms the environment.
