Cornell University's doctoral student Ruidong Zhang has been working on a new technology dubbed the EchoSpeech, which is a speech recognition system. It is able to recognize up to 31 silent commands only based on facial movements and it is powered by artificially intelligent technology.
This is developed by the school's Smart Computer Interfaces for Future Interactions lab. It is only dependent on a few minutes of getting to know users before it is able to know the lip and mouth movements. Zhang explains that “For people who cannot vocalize sound, this silent speech technology could be an excellent input for a voice synthesizer. It could give patients their voices back." This way, the technology could be controlled on smartphones in order to speak to one another without sound.
