This curvilinear hospital features an eye-catching facade. Designed by Swiss studio Manuel Herz Architects, the building distinguishes itself with lattice brickwork. The project, commissioned by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and local charity Le Korsa, involves Maternity and Paediatric Hospital in Tambacounda, Senegal.
The curvilinear hospital has a distinctive S-shape. Founder Manuel Herz shares that "[he] developed a design for a building in a curvilinear shape that is as long as possible and as thin as possible." These decisions were made for two reasons, involving functionality and aesthetics. For one, the region is known to be extremely hot, with temperatures rising to 45 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the Maternity and Paediatric Hospital is an addition to a bigger complex, which is distinguished by round forms.
