OMA Will Transform an Old Bakery into an Arts Centre
Kalin Ned — May 19, 2022 — Art & Design
A new contemporary art facility is coming to the streets of Detroit. The architectural office to tackle this challenge is Dutch practice OMA (its New York office) and the building that awaits renovation is a derelict commercial bakery.
OMA's contemporary art facility will combine cultural, educational, and artistic programming. The building that once housed the bakery will also be extended. By the end of the architectural project, the complex will include spaces for exhibiting, affordable artist studios, as well as something that contemporary entrepreneurs like to call "creative retail." OMA will be working alongside the co-founders of Detroit's Library Street Collective—which is a commercial gallery in the city. The resulting contemporary art facility will also house Signal-Return and PASC which are two extraordinary not-for-profit organizations.
The development is officially titled 'Lantern.'
