This dark, ultra-stylish coated building extension features an interesting material finish. Architectural Office S&M makes use of spray-on rubber — a material "originally developed for oil rigs," in the construction of this structure. The project is meant to provide extra space for a kitchen and a new bathroom for a 19th century home in East London.
There is a number of reasons that influenced Office S&M's use of spray-on rubber. For one, the coating provides durability and is waterproof. In addition to this, it is also incredibly accessible in terms of price.
Aside from functionality, the coated building definitely answers to the aesthetic of modernism. While the silhouette of the 'Janus House' is uniform and slick, there are certain stylistic choices that add a slight quirk. An example of this would be the mismatching windows.
