VATRAA Adds an Extension to a House in Stoke Newington
Amy Duong — October 13, 2024 — Art & Design
Architecture firm VATRAA adds a new extension to a home in London's Stoke Newington area complete with a 'brutalist cat flap.' The section is crafted with the bricks of the structure that once stood in its place and the space was designed fro a family who were looking to replace their cramped and dark extension. Now it has a dining and kitchen area that opens up to the garden.
The studio explains, "The project started with an idea to fully reclaim all bricks from the existing extension, and reuse them in the new envelope. However, some bricks could not be saved, and in some parts, we completed with reclaimed stock bricks from other London sites. Staining the bricks allowed for a contextual integration and also made the existing loft slates look 'as part of the design' by matching their colour."
