Inspired by the traditional party balloons that you normally find at a children’s birthday party, Dutch born designer Marcel Wanders created a series of chairs called the Carbon Balloon Chair. Not only does the chair look like it’s completely made with balloons, it’s also made from an extremely lightweight carbon fiber.
The chair was unveiled at the retrospective exhibition in Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum for Marcel Wanders. The process of the production was handmade using actual party balloons that were filled with compressed air, then they were wrapped in carbon fiber and hardened using epoxy resin.
The entire chair only weighs around 800 grams. The seat area was also made from a thin sheet of carbon fiber. “Working with carbon is favored by Marcel for its weight minimization possibilities. The chair requires fewer materials, generates less waste and is highly durable,” says the studio.
