Brokeback Mountain, the movie starring the late Heath Ledger, will go from being a pop culture movie sensation to a cutting edge opera. The New York City Opera will put on their own adaption of the big screen hit featuring two gay cowboys, originally played by Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The show is anticipated to open for the the 2013 spring season and will follow the secret, two decade love affair of the two ranch hands.
The movie was based on the short story also titled Brokeback Mountain, which was the initially inspiration for composer Charles Wuorinen.
“Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that director Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so,†Wuorinen says.
And FYI, Jake Gyllenhaal was voted “hottest gay icon†of the year by AfterElton.com!
