Just as there's Pantone as a handy color reference tool for designers, there's Beertone, a beer color matching guide for beer enthusiasts.
Beertone first launched back in 2012, but since then, creators Alexander Michelbach and Daniel Eugster have been developing a more sophisticated system with crowdsourced spectrophotometers and the aid of beer drinkers all over the world—part of the challenge in getting a more precise color match was figuring out how to exclude foam and bubbles from the equation.
With a better system for beer color analysis in place, Beertone has already begun more country-specific beer reference guides for Brazil and Switzerland, which include the colors of 202 different beers and profiles of different breweries in each country. These handy beer reference guides can be purchased for about $40-50, and there are more editions on the way, including one for Germany.
