BMW and Daimler have announced a collaboration to develop automated driving technologies. The two companies have indicated the technology will roll out to market in 2024. The technologies that will undergo production will bring the vehicles into Level four for automated driving standards, which are set by the SAE. Level four standards are regarded as full autonomy vehicles with no human intervention.
This automated driving partnership will also include technologies that are not fully autonomous. These include driver assisting technologies including a smart cruise control as well as an automated parking system.
The initial agreement is a non-exclusive one -- something that's becoming an industry norm for automated driving advancements. BMW and Daimler have also indicated that they're in talks regarding expanding development to also look at automated driving within the context of dense urban environments.
