NASA and Axiom Space have revealed the new spacesuits that the astronauts are wearing for the Artemis III Moon mission. The prototype spacesuits will be used for moonwalks near the lunar South Pole. The design of the spacesuits has more technical capabilities, which are more flexible and can accommodate a broader range of body types. In terms of the color shown in the unveiling, the spacesuits will not be colored black but will be white color instead to protect astronauts against extreme heat.
Certain standout features of the spacesuit are that the helmet includes lights and an HD camera. The spacesuit also contains more joints to let the astronauts conveniently move around. Another feature is that the entire spacesuit can handle extreme cold, even on the shadowy surfaces of the Moon. Director of NASA's Johnson Space Center Vanessa Wyche spoke about the new spacesuits: “So for 40 years, we’ve been using the same suit based on that technology. And now today, Axiom is going to innovate. We’re going to provide (access to) all of our facilities and we will be working together to make sure that we have a safe suit that performs and everything that our astronauts use for doing surface operations.”
The Artemis III Moon mission is slated for December 2025 and will be the first crewed lunar landing since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The Artemis III Moom mission will also have the first woman to walk on the Moon and the first person of color. The spacesuits were unveiled at an event at Space Center Houston in Texas.
