In Situ is a collection of over 60 photographs, captured and compiled by French photographer Eric Pillot, that captures animals in zoo environments that are deemed 'natural' but appear oddly artificial and unsuitable to their animal inhabitants.
Some of the environments pictured are confusing and off-putting. In one, a kangaroo is depicted standing in front of a bright red wall, the kind that has nothing to do with its natural environment in the wild. Another shows a pink flamingo standing in front of a mural painted with pink flamingos.
The photographs show animals in zoos whose environments reflect the humans that built them rather than the animals that are confined in them and looked at by people who are okay with assuming that the animals are appropriately housed and cared for.
