A project called ‘Abandoned America’ by photographer Matthew Christopher captures desolate places across the United States. Christopher’s photos document abandoned spaces and their decaying glory. The series of photos capture locations once brimming with activity such as hotels, prisons, factories and churches.
Christopher began seeking out abandoned spaces after he attempted to document the descent of a state’s hospital system. This project expands his scope to various locations across America that have been left to rot unnoticed by the rest of the world.
The pieces in Abandoned America have a certain surreal feel to them. Christopher’s photos capture spaces that seem to have taken a life of their own. Even after being stripped of their original meaning, the locations have taken on an entirely new purpose.
