For the 2011 Budapest Design Week, design furniture shop Mobelkunst organized a curiously cool exhibition entitled 2500 WATT.
The 2500 WATT exhibit's name comes from the design project it stands for. Twenty-five contemporary Hungarian artists and designers were asked to revamp the well-known, classic-industrial 100 Watts lighting system of the long-past communist era. The result is 2500 watts worth of design lamps radiating modern art, thus the name of the project.
The range of the exhibited pieces is endless, from lit graffiti art to lamps with fur. I never could have imagined that industrial lamps could be used as artistic canvasses.
At the end of the 2011 Budapest Design week, the 25 creations of the 2500 WATT exhibit were put on auction; part of its benefits went to future projects aiming to improve Budapest's public spaces and central institution's appearance.
