At the foundation of technology is a desire to solve problems, and as the problems consumers face on a day-to-day basis become more niche, so to do tech trends. This ironically does not mean gadgets have become more complex; in fact, this past year saw more tech with simple purpose, executed in a user-friendly way. Thus, 2013 was the year of the 'I-should-have-thought-of-that' product, such as the smartphone watch or malleable tablet.
Tech also became much more about customization and expression, with frugal consumers more eager to partake in the DIY pattern that took design by storm in 2012, except this time, with their gadgets. Tutorials such as the floral pressed phone cases or dapper smartphone wallets brought personality and aesthetics to the forefront of tech trends in 2013.
