From Criminalized Kids Characters to President Reviving Sculptures
Alyson Wyers — August 29, 2013 — Pop Culture
This collection of pop culture portraits features a variety of finds that focus on reinventing popular celebrity portraits in addition to other cultural phenomena and iconic artwork. Many pieces redo classic images like the Mona Lisa or Abe Lincoln in new and innovative methods, such as condiments, matches, bubble wrap and currency. Other pieces look at comic book characters and roles from television shows like Breaking Bad.
Another way to look at pop culture portraits in a new light is by combining elements in a mash up. This includes drawing the cast of various TV programs in a Simpsons-esque style or illustrating comedians like Amy Poehler in superhero costumes.
Some of these pieces also have a deeper meaning. For example, a series of portraits were redone in pink hues to raise questions surrounding masculinity in society.
