From Mutinous Masked Models to Laced Sleeping Beauties
Rebecca Byers — January 30, 2012 — Fashion
Masked fashion features are everywhere lately; whether it's lace-eye masks or full-blown animal headgear, these facial fashions add a surreal and freakish element to a photo shoot that is important when attempting to evoke emotion from an audience. While at times unsettling, masks are used to stir a reaction within the viewer, which is what makes an image successful; this is especially important in advertising.
Masks are a symbol of pretense and disguise; they present a stylized facade to the world that is not too different from the general intention of the fashion industry. Masked fashion features -- aside from being symbolic and a bit ironic -- provide an ethereal aesthetic to the photo shoot that captures the attention of the viewer while highlighting the outfit at hand.
