Innovations are constantly emerging in fashion, technology and design. In the past decade alone, tech and design have revolutionized our culture more so than the 100 years prior. The sleek smartphones in our pockets are more powerful than the PCs we owned high school. Fashion is constantly in a state of change, and with the rise of blogging, red carpet obsession, runway glam and glitzy editorials, it's hard not to notice how fast fashion moves in present culture. One day it's leather jogging pants, the next day it's oversized Pharrell hats.
But what are the major "firsts" in fashion, tech and design that really shaped who we are today? How have these breakthroughs changed our lives? Do you remember your first encounter with the ones that made our list?
After reviewing hundreds of trends in fashion, tech and design, we pulled together some bizarre and interesting examples that impacted our day-to-day lives and changed how interpret and interact with the world around us.
We examined quirky wearable tech gadgets packed with WiFi and GPS -- two technological firsts that when originally introduced were expensive and difficult to use, but eventually paved the way for modern mobile browsing. Smartphones, tablets and iProducts are frequent on this list since they are the devices that have shaped us the most. Remember the first time listening to an iPod? What about sending a text to a friend on the other side of the country? Those experiences are taken for granted because they're so common now. You'll also see a fair amount of social media here, as it's become a staple in the Web 2.0 landscape and an integrated part of the modern human experience.
In fashion, we reflected on classic trends inspired by icons like Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. We looked at emerging patterns in modern fashion while showcasing the blogosphere's impact on the industry
Design is something that's more appreciated thanks to luminaries like Jackson Pollock, Frank Gehry and Steve Jobs, and our list showcases the best in design from tech and advertising to architecture and art. We love DIY design and it's a trend that appears a lot in our list. With sites like Behance and Deviant Art, along with online stores like Etsy, it's easier for designers, artists and creatives to share their work with world.
Now, we want to hear about your "firsts". What was the spark that set you on path of curiosity; the inspiration that lead you down the road you're currently traveling on? Maybe it was you that first invention you crafted in your parent's basement? Perhaps you saw a runway show that inspired you to create your own fashion blog.
