From Exotic Dancer Coloring Books to Swearing Storybooks
Laura McQuarrie — June 19, 2013 — Naughty
Being read a bedtime story is one of the best things about being a kid, but even precious moments like these could have been easily spoiled by adult kids books with mature themes. Artists and designers are twisting classic childhood tales and titles to reflect commentaries on current world issues. This juxtaposition of adult-themed issues with the innocence of items like childrens' coloring books makes for the perfect way to deliver a shocking statement.
These twists to childhood books are infused with nightmarish creatures, swear words and real world problems like violence and poverty that are not sugar-coated for younger audiences. Although these are issues that are prevalent and widely spread, they are typically not delivered to children in this way. This in itself makes a revealing statement on the desensitization of youth.
