This Silphie Packaging is Made with Locally Grown Material
This silphie packaging has been unveiled by STI Group as a collaboration with PreZero as an eco-friendly take on supermarket packaging that would work to greatly reduce reliance on traditional materials. The packaging is made using locally grown silphie plant fibers and will be supplied to the grocery store chains Lidl and Kaufland for use with fruits and vegetables. The material used for the packaging is perfectly suited for direct contact with food and could be further enhanced with additional barriers to enhance its resiliency against water and fats.
CEO of STI Group Jakob Rinninger spoke on the new silphie packaging saying, "Through a development partnership with OutNature, our in-house materials lab has been exploring the technical properties of silphie material since late 2020. Pioneering tests have examined every facet of its production performance, from printability and varnishability to laminating and die-cutting. Silphie material has proven itself and can now be used in cardboard or corrugated board format for making packaging and displays.”

Del Monte's Canned Green Beans are the First to Be Upcycled Certified
Del Monte's canned green beans are now the first in the industry that can boast being Upcycled Certified by the Upcycled Food Association. The Del Monte Blue Lake Petite Cut and Blue Lake Farmhouse Cut Green Beans are made wth upcycled and sustainably grown green beans sourced from Wisconsin and Illinois.
Del Monte's Upcycled Certified Green Bean products helped to redirect about 600,000 pounds of surplus green beans last year, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackling food waste in a responsible way. It's said that if 50 to 75% of food waste is reduced by 2050, up to 26 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions could be avoided.
Turner Wyatt, CEO and Co-founder of the Upcycled Food Association, says "When people hear the term 'upcycled,' they often think the product is going to be something they have never tried before. Nope. These are the green beans we have been eating our whole lives. The only difference is that by choosing the Upcycled Certified ones, consumers are actively preventing food waste."

P&G is Set to Pack Herbal Essences in Molecular-Recycled Plastic
To bring the haircare industry one step closer to sustainability, P&G's Herbal Essences partnered with Eastman to package its shampoo and conditioner collection in molecular-recycled plastic. Eastman's collection of containers dubbed the Eastman Renew material will make Herbal Essences the first of P&G's brands to use environmentally-friendly material as its primary packaging.
Packaging made from Eastman Renew resins includes 50% certified recycled plastic. The new haircare containers follow an August 2021 agreement between the two brands to collaborate on initiatives that advance the recycling of more materials, thereby encouraging eco-conscious behavior among consumers. To kick off the initiative, five Herbal Essences bio: renew sulfate-free collections will include the upgraded Eatman Renew materials, including the Alow Vera line-up.

Scientists Develop Sustainable, Popcorn-Based Alternative
With the ever-growing need to become eco-friendly, German scientists have developed a biodegradable Styrofoam alternative. Styrofoam is used in countless ways from structure building to product packaging. The worst part about this is Styrofoam is very far from sustainable. Popcorn is, though, and this was the basis for German scientists to find this biodegradable alternative.
The process involves using very fine corn grains that expand when exposed to pressurized steam. These grains can even be drawn from leftovers from discarded corn production. They are then mixed with a natural bonding agent and pressed into shape. The finished product looks almost identical to Styrofoam, if Styrofoam was made of corn. This material is claimed to be compostable and less flammable than Styrofoam itself, making it a much more preferable alternative.
1. Biodegradable Packaging Trend - The development of sustainable packaging alternatives using natural and renewable materials like corn creates an opportunity for companies to align with eco-friendly values.
2. Circular Economy Trend - The use of leftover corn material to create eco-friendly packaging materials highlights the potential for a circular economy approach that maximizes resource efficiency.

2. Construction Industry - The development of biodegradable alternatives to Styrofoam could disrupt the construction industry by allowing builders to use more eco-friendly materials in their projects.
