This Treated Citrus Peel Adsorbs Metals and Organic Waste Matter
Alyson Wyers — April 12, 2017Food waste has been used as an environmentally friendly energy source, and now citrus peel is being used to clean water. The method was developed by researchers from the Universidad de Granada in Spain and Mexico's Center for Electrochemical Research and Technological Development and Center of Engineering and Industrial Development.
An Instant Controlled Pressure Drop treats orange and grapefruit peels to give them adsorbent properties, which means they hold metals on the surface but don't soak them up. The citrus peel can also remove organic pollutants and improve the process of waste management by potentially replacing activated carbon filters.
This demonstrates how fruit waste can be used for sustainability purposes while also bettering existed processes.
