Hidden Modern Cottages

West Tytherly Cottage's Classic Front Hides a Contemporary Renovation

Nestled into the English countryside, West Tytherly Cottage was all but obliged to stay in line with the traditional designs that typify the manors and houses in the area. However, the clients were interested in having a modern design in their cottage, so Stephen Marshall Architects managed to provide both at the same time. The cottage has a classic, ivied front facade that obscures the aggressively modern glass extension coming off the back of the home.

Part of the cleverness of the design is precisely in the layout of the home. West Tytherly Cottage backs onto an idyllic lea, and since its modern extension is covered primarily in glass, it gives the occupants of the home a wraparound view of that peaceful English pasture.
