Toast-Flavored Waters

This Bizarre Water Beverage is Designed to Taste Just Like Baked Bread

A bread-flavored water beverage probably sounds pretty bizarre, but it was a popular drink given to those that were sick back in the 1800s. Justina Huddleston of lifestyle blog She Knows recently tested out the ancient recipe to see if it held up any merit to actually tasting like bread.

To make this unique beverage, begin by carefully toasting several slices of bread. The key is to not burn the bread, but to turn it a light golden brown shade so that the caramelized particles flavor the water. Then place the toast slab into a jar of cold water and leave it in the fridge to marinate. The end result is a cold beverage that tastes just like liquid toast. Huddleston recommends, "Serve it very, very cold, and don't make it with toast that has even a speck of char on it, or the whole concoction will be unpalatable and bitter."
