In order to raise awareness for the rights of women in Amsterdam, artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada launched the Vogelvrije Vrouwen project to demand people's attention.
The project certainly makes a statement as it consists of the largest portrait of a person ever made on Dutch soil. It is hard to ignore the extremely large image of the woman peering at you through steely eyes and measuring 125 by 170 meters larger than a football field. Rodriguez-Gerada really altered the landscape in order to execute her vision, using tons of rope, straw, soil, sand and no less than 1150 wooden poles.
The Vogelvrije Vrouwen project was commissioned by the Mama Cash feminist rights foundation for International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2012.
