The 'Head in the Clouds' installation uses over 50,000 upcycled plastic bottles to create an organic cloud-like structure for the Figment NYC festival. Designers Jason Klimoski of AIA and Lesley Chang of Studio Klimoski Chang Architects created this installation as a representation of the number of plastic bottles in an hour that are discarded every hour in New York City.
Visitors can walk through the contemplative interior space of the cloud to experience the light filtering through the bottles. The outer shell of the cloud is opaque and uniformly colored, but each of the bottles is filled with a small amount of blue-tinted water to mimic a cloud-filled blue sky.
The installation was set up on Governors Island in early June 2013, and was completely dismantled after the Figment NYC festival.
