Olympic Emoji Languages

SKINS Designed 'Esportanto' as a Universal Language for Sports Fans

For the Rio 2016 Olympics, Australian sportswear brand SKINS created 'Esportanto' as an emoji-based universal language that fans can use to communicate with one another, regardless of what native language they speak.

At first the language might seem a bit cryptic, but it's easy to understand once a few basic words are identified. For instance, Esportanto spells out "Olympics" by using an "O," flexing biceps (for "limb") and a framed photograph emoji (to represent "pics").

This year, heightened emphasis has been put on social media integration for the Olympics, leading some to call this year's event the 'Smartphone Olympics.' Other emojis that are appearing for this year's games include official ones from Twitter, as well as the 'BoltMoji' keyboard from Puma that celebrates Usain Bolt as the fastest man in the world.
