Artist Mark Webber's typographic city maps are nothing short of masterful pieces of art.
His patience is astounding, as each map takes months to complete. Webber first has to research the city until he knows every nook and cranny of the metropolis. Then he slowly carves every road name, street, building and district of the city backwards. Webber uses a lino cut so everything has to first be carved backwards so that when the carving is printed onto paper it reads from left to right. It's not surprising that Webber takes several months to create a single map.
After all of his hard work, Webber prints the lino cut onto huge pieces of paper, creating supersized typographic city maps. They're the perfect work of art for a new home or even just to get city savvy before travelling. Either way, they're a new way of looking at an urban landscape; not just as a city, but as a living piece of art.
