Visitors to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in the South African city of Cape Town are set to be enthralled by its truly spectacular architectural form, made possible by taking a huge grain silo and reinventing into the biggest art museum building in the country.
Conceived and executed by Heatherwick Studio, this museum building has a tubular form thanks to the use of 42 concrete tubes and were originally built as part of the grain silo. But by slicing away portions of the tubes, Heatherwick Studio managed to create visually spectacular gallery areas.
While the presence of concrete tubes presented a challenge, they also led to the creation of a wonderfully unique museum building, which speaks to how intelligent architecture and design can be used to get around the most difficult structural problems.
