7-Eleven launched a trial store in Tokyo that introduces consumers to a self-checkout system and the opportunity to take advantage of a facial recognition payment system.
The new trial shop features technology developed by NEC Corp. and is situated in the same building that houses the NEC Group. Thousands of NEC Group employees are able to use the shop, as long as they have their photo registered in the system. To take the stress out of shopping, an employee is able to seamlessly cash out and have the amount owing automatically deducted from their salary.
As well as offering greater convenience to shoppers, this system serves as an exploration of a cost-saving measure that could see more convenience stores accepting cashless payments in the years to come.
