Cloud-Simulating Installations

This Tree-Top Installation Feels Like You're Inside of a Cloud

Nadine Kesting, Jordi Iranzo and Stefanie Rittler designed this tree-top installation, titled 'Cumulus, A Space For Calm,' as part of their graduation project for the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design.

The designers fashioned the Cumulus out of permeable fabric which allows moisture to penetrate the cocooned environment. The translucent material is supported by metal legs, raising it to the same height as the nearby tree tops. Iranzo explains, "The question was: 'what happens in a real cloud? If we could go inside one, what would happen?'" In other words, this isn't the place to be if you're looking to shield yourself from rain or other elements.

The polyester fabric responds to the movements of the people inside, but more importantly, it imbues the body with lightness that feels much like floating.
