The Paddenbroek Education Center was transformed by Jo Taillieu Architecten from a former fruit farm in Gooik, Belgium. It features refurbished agricultural buildings that have been enclosed within a greenhouse structure.
The municipality of Gooik, who established the Center, aims to educate visitors about the countryside in the surrounding Pajottenland region. The relationship between nature, agriculture, tourism, recreation, and regional identity is thus exhibited through a series of multifunctional spaces. Some original farming buildings have been deliberately preserved to maintain a connection with the site's past.
Taillieu explains that a volume of glass and steel was constructed around the farmhouse to maximize the shared use of space, while evoking the region's agricultural vernacular. Photovoltaic panels on the roof to generate energy and a cafe on the inside showcase the building's versatility.
