Montana Microbial Products is a research lab in Montana and in 2019, it received the Top Innovator Award for US Seafood at the 2019 Fish 2.0 Symposium for its sustainable plant-based protein. This product is designed as an alternative to traditional proteins in aquaculture feed and pet food.
The sustainable plant-based protein is derived from non-GMO barley, without the use of harsh chemicals or solvents. Current feeding trial work has been run in the United States, Canada, Scotland, as well as Japan. Not long thereafter, samples of the BPC product were sent to Norway. These trials have been conducted with numerous species, including trout and salmon. Barley has proven to be even more advantageous than the more traditional soy protein.
