The Super Care Initiative is Training Cashiers to Spot Elder Isolation

Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn is training its cashiers in the Hague to spot signs of loneliness and isolation in their elder customers as a part of the Super Care Initiative. The program will see 20 designated Albert Heijn employees trained to discuss issues of forgetfulness, neglect or loneliness with elderly customers direct to them by the cashiers who have been trained to spot the signs.

The Super Care Initiative is a program created by Albert Heijn and care organization Royaal Zorg that was inspired by an employee moved by the loss of a regular customer that caused her to consider if there was more she could have done to help.

Albert Heijn recently opened up the InStock restaurant, an Amsterdam eatery that benefits from the leftover food from its supermarkets, which was also an idea brought to them by front line employees.
