Artist Joseph Marr created a raspberry confection in the shape of a human head -- a life-sized sugar skull sculpture.
The sugar skull sculpture was created for an exhibition in support of organ donation called 'Celebrabis Vitae,' put on by the Skull Appreciation Society. Marr says that sugar is extremely challenging and volatile to work with, much like glass. It must be heated to an incredible 366.8°F before it melts and can be sculpted. When it starts to cool, it solidifies very rapidly, meaning that the artist had to create his sugar skull sculpture in an extremely short time frame. Marr also made versions of the sugar skull sculpture in green apple and cola flavors.
Skulls are a popular and fascinating theme in design and art. This life-sized, translucent sugar skull sculpture is a particularly haunting example.
