Intel's 'freeD' Introduces a New Kind of Sports Viewing Technology

At the Technology and Innovation Tour India 2016, Intel showed of an impressive new technology for sports viewing.

'freeD' is a new kind of stadium system that will make it possible to capture 360-degree footage of an event, especially for the purposes of viewing replays, highlights, disputed calls and more from multiple angles. 28 high-definition cameras are stationed at multiple points around a stadium and their feeds are sent to Intel Xeon workstations, which can be edited into zoomable 3D clips. These 360-degree videos can then be slowed down and replayed for the purposes of entertainment, admiring the precision of an athlete or picking apart an official call down to the second.

Intel's freeD technology is first being tested with the NBA and MLB, setting a new precedent for the future of sports.
