Japanese firm Studio Aula designed the 'Mukawa House,' a single-story holiday home constructed from blackened timber.
The simple bungalow is located in a wooded site overlooking two mountain ranges in Japan. To take advantage of the views, the architects alternated between high-level windows and large expanses of glazing. The exterior is arranged as a series of stepped volumes that increase in size as they progress. The architects explain, "We created a few spots where the scenery visually breaks into the house in a sequence."
Inside, the living area is broken up across the three volumes, each of which provides its own entrance. The doors are fashioned from a pale timber that contrasts nicely against the black-painted timber of the exterior.
