This Shanghai restaurant is a new outpost for Taiwanese dining chain Hutong, which only recently began expansion into China. The Hutong ("alleyway") Restaurant chain is inspired by traditional Chinese decor and to maintain the theme in its new China-based locations, the interiors feature plenty of window screens with the layouts mimicking the shape of an alleyway.
Designed by Studio Oj, this particular Hutong location features a long yakiniku bar which the designer's maintain is essential for interacting with customers. Throughout the Shanghai restaurant are plenty of windows through which customers can peek through to see other parts of the space.
The name Hutong is derived from the term for the narrow alleyways of residential Beijing and other cities of North China.
