After much anticipation, the security drones from Secom are now ready from service. In addition to being programmed to simply capture footage of cars and people who are found in places where they should not be, the drone is designed to automatically pursue them in order to ensure faces and licence plates appear on camera. Even skilled runners will have trouble keeping ahead of the drone, which can fly faster than speeds of six miles per hour.
The price of the drone is not fit for hobbyists, but even so, the drones are not available for personal use. The Japanese company charges more than $6,000 for the initial purchase of the drone, on top of $40 monthly fees to maintain the security service.
Now that Japan has amended its Civil Aeronautics Law, this kind of technology will be particularly useful for governments, organizations and other groups that need to protect certain areas from the public.
