This year’s Sculpture by the Sea event saw some fascinating and perplexing designs, including this sculpture made from thousands of blonde Barbie dolls.
Belgian-born and Australia-based artist Annette Thas created the Wave, which was created from tying the Barbies onto an aluminium wave-shaped frame. At the distance, the wave looks like it is covered with hay, but upon closer inspection, it is clear the naked dolls with cornsilk hair are attached to it.
While the Wave provides some shade, Thas explained that it is suppose to convey the message of genetic modification and the tyranny of the idealized image of beauty as portrayed by the blonde Barbies. The yearly event takes place at Cottesloe beach in Perth, Australia.
