BIG, the architectural megafirm founded by superstar architect Bjarke Ingels, has recently won a competition to design the new San Pellegrino headquarters. Though the new complex will house both the sparkling water company's offices and factories, BIG has found a way to keep the industrial aspect attractive without sacrificing functionality.
The San Pellegrino headquarters is located in a terme of the same name at the base of the Alps of northern Italy. In designing the winning proposal, BIG looked at the shapes of the surrounding mountains for inspiration. Similar in shape to architectural arches, the mountains inform the broad-spanning arches that characterize BIG's design. Indeed, arches are the most common visual aspect of the interior space (according to concept drawings.)
